Smoke Alarms Saves Life After Milton Keynes Fire
Firefighters were called to a flat in Milton Keynes at 6am on the morning of the 14th January after the occupier fell asleep with food in the oven. Neighbours were alerted to the fire by smoke alarms in the property going off. The smoke alarms were provided by Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue firefighters on a previous visit.
This post follows on nicely from our kitchen fire safety post last week by the small spate of kitchen fires in and around Bedford over Christmas.
The main point to take away is that if occupiers are asleep in a property that is slowly filling with smoke, you cannot rely on those people waking up on their own in order to save themselves.
Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue will visit domestic homes to perform a free fire risk check. All you need to do is call them on 01296 744477 or email them on [email protected] to arrange.
We also offer a domestic fire risk assessment resource that you can use:
Risk Assessment Guidance Notes
If you are a landlord or have a business in which people sleep this highlights the importance of following the regulations and ensuring they have adequate early detection and alarm backed up by a clear escape route, fire extinguishers and emergency lighting. We are on hand to discuss things with you over the phone and if you would like to go ahead we can conduct fire risk assessment with recommendations on how to build or improve the fire safety management system on the premises.
Fire safety management can seem daunting looking at it without advice but it can be made very simple once the assessment has been made and systems put in place. Done properly it can save lives, save money and ensure business continuity if the worst does happen.
